From 1998 to 2000, she was the chair of the Lewisham Deptford Conservative Association. Truss ran unsuccessfully for Greenwich London Borough Council in 1998 (for the Vanbrugh ward) and 2002. She was elected as a Greenwich councillor for Eltham South in 2006 and resigned shortly before the end of her term in 2010.
Truss was the President of the Liberal Democrats at Oxford University and a member of the national executive committee of the Liberal Democrats Youth and Students.
