Kaplan is an Activist who is well known as the author of “The Story of Jane: The Legendary Underground Feminist Abortion Service.”She is well known as a founding member of the Emma Goldman Women’s Health Center in Chicago and a member of the Jane Collective. She attended home births as a lay midwife after moving to rural Wisconsin and it was at this time that she established a shelter-based program for battered women.
She worked as an advocate for nursing home residents when she moved to the East Coast and also managed care project director for Citizen Action of New York. She continues to lecture about Jane and is on the board of the National Women’s Health Network and continuously participates in community projects
