On March 15th, 2022, Shalanda became the first Black woman to lead the White House budget office after the Senate confirmed her to the Cabinet-level position with bipartisan support. She won on a Vote Count of 611-36 in her favor.
For the past two years, She was the director of the Office of Management and Budget. In March she was confirmed the Senate to serve as the deputy director and went on to rise to her Current Role after Neera Tanden’s nomination was withdrawn because she lacked support from the Senate.
Born in n Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and raised in Clinton, Louisiana Young holds a Master of Health Administration from Tulane University and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Loyola University New Orleans.
She became a Presidential Management Fellow with the National Institutes of Health in 2001 after she moved to Washington Dc. She worked s a staffer for the United States House Committee on Appropriations for 14 years.
She went on to be named she has named staff director of the committee in 2017 a position she held until 2021 when she was nominated for deputy director of OMB. Young was involved in the federal government response to the COVID-19 pandemic and with creating proposals related to the 2018–2019 United States federal government shutdown as a staff director on the committee.
She received some praise from Republican members of the Senate Budget Committee, including Lindsey Graham during a hearing concerning her nomination for deputy director of the OMB.
