In February 2008 Ryu got her first win as a professional which she bagged with six strokes on the American Cactus Tour having Turned professional in 2008 at the young age of 17.
Ryu won the US Women’s Open on July 11, 2011. She trailed clubhouse leader Hee Kyung Seo by one stroke on the 18th hole of the final round, the tournament’s most difficult hole, but hit her approach to 6 feet and made the birdie putt to force a playoff. Ryu won the three-hole playoff by birdieing the final hole.
Ryu won her second LPGA Tour title in 2012 at the Jamie Farr Toledo Classic. Ryu had a large enough lead in the LPGA Rookie of the Year points standings with one tournament remaining in the season to clinch the award for the season.
Ryu was defeated by fellow South Korean Inbee Park in a sudden-death playoff at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship on June 23, 2013. Park won with a birdie on the first extra hole after Ryu could only manage par.

During the third round, Thompson was discovered to have incorrectly marked and replaced her ball on the 17th hole. Thompson had a two-stroke lead at the time. Ryu went on to win the playoff with a birdie on the first extra hole.
