Jay has always been a central figure in the Serial podcast following his involvement in Hae Min Lee’s case. He previously worked at the Drug Emporium store a short walk from his home. Serial created a timeline that depicted the conflicts between a few of Jay’s various versions of events on January 13, 1999.

Wilds has previously worked as a Drug Emporium and is well known as the Star witness who gained Stardom after he helped convict Adnan Syed of Hae Min Lee’s murder. On February 9, a passerby discovered Lee’s partially buried body in Baltimore’s Leakin Park.
The person who reported finding the body drew the attention of the police. On February 12, the Baltimore City Police Homicide Division received an anonymous phone call suggesting that investigators focus on Lee’s ex-boyfriend and classmate, Adnan Syed.
Jay, one of Syed’s friends, told police that Syed had expressed plans to kill Lee and that he had assisted Syed in burying Lee’s body after Syed confessed to killing her on January 13.
On February 16, Baltimore Police requested cellular phone records for a phone belonging to Syed. On February 28, Syed was arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
